It was announced Saturday that George Washington’s Jordan Roland is transferring out of GW. Roland becomes the third Colonial to leave Foggy Bottom early this offseason, following in the wake of Kevin Marfo, Jaren Sina, and Collin Goss.

Marfo and Goss are transferring, after playing very minor roles on the team this past season. Jaren Sina was likely going to lose the starting point guard role to Jair Bolden, and his pro-career stock would have gone down. But Jordan Roland’s departure really seems to make very little sense.
Jordan averaged 6.7 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 20.1 minutes per game-a dramatic increase from his freshman year at GW. And due to the departure of Marfo, Sina and Goss, along with graduates Tyler Cavanaugh and Matt Hart, Jordan very likely would have been a starter for George Washington next season. Frankly, this is quite the head-scratcher.
Roland’s departure continues a discouraging trend of outgoing transfers, bringing the total up to 16 players since Mike Lonergan (and Maurice Joseph as an assistant) was hired prior to the 2011-12 season. The Colonials cannot afford to continue this trend if they want to contend for A-10 titles and NCAA Tournament appearances every year. It appears as if not everything was solved simply by firing Mike Lonergan. There may perhaps be other troubles, that are causes for the high transfer rate.
George Washington has now officially gone into rebuilding mode, as four of their top five scorers from last season will have either graduated, transferred or left early to play over seas. Next year isn’t looking too bright for the Colonials, and the program as a whole is in a bit of turmoil.

Losing Roland is devastating. He would’ve been one of the top guards in the A10 next year, was already quietly one of the most efficient in non-full-time minutes last year. This is a bummer.
Roland is soft, scores 15 one day and then will drop goose eggs on offense. A glorified D2 level player. Another big swing and miss for the fired ex-Coach.
