Kevin Marfo and Jaren Sina leave GW

Freshman Kevin Marfo and Junior Jaren Sina both announced Friday that they are leaving George Washington after just one season each in Foggy Bottom.

Marfo will transfer, but has yet to accept an offer to attend another school yet.

Sina, on the other hand will leaving early to play professionally in Europe.

Last season, Jaren averaged 9.0 points, along with 3.3 assists and 2.7 rebounds in 32.0 minutes per game. Sina scored a season-high 22 points against Saint Bonaventure back on February 11th. Sina was one of GW’s most consistent shooters, and began the year at point guard before Jair Bolden took over midway through the season. Sina’s departure is a surprise to say the least, as he is just the third Colonial to leave early to play professionally in recent memory. The other two were the late Yinka Dare in 1993 (drafted 14th overall to the New Jersey Nets after leading GW to their only Sweet 16 appearance) and J.R. Pinnock (drafted 58th overall by the Dallas Mavericks before being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Kevin Marfo’s departure, on the other hand, comes as less of a surprise. There was such high expectations surrounding Marfo entering his freshman season at GW, but he never seemed to find confidence in his game.  Kevin averaged just 2.7 points and 2.8 rebounds in just 8.9 minutes per game. He did score 18 points against Florida State in the BB&T Classic back in December, but never really found any consistency. Marfo did not appear in the final 11 games of the season (including postseason), and made his last appearance back on February 8th against VCU.

It is worth noting, however, that it did not appear that Marfo always got along with his teammates at GW. See the following indecent from the game against VCU, which related or otherwise, happened to be the last game Marfo appeared in.

Granted this speculation, but this is too interesting of a coincidence not to mention. Also worth noting that this was re-tweeted by fellow Colonial Collin Smith and Arnaldo Toro himself.
