A-10 Blog Poll Power Rankings

Mat Shelton-EideBy Mat Shelton-EideDecember 29, 20141 Comment3 Mins Read

We’re just about done with non-conference play with a number of big wins out there for the taking (talkin’ to you, Davidson!). But before we wrap things up, we decided to reach out to our A-10 blogger friends from around the league to see how they would rank the conference at this point in the season. Here’s how your favorite team did.

1. VCU (5*) (high 1, low 2) – “Don’t let its three losses fool you. Battletested VCU is the class of the A-10. At this point, VCU should be favored in every conference game, minus its trip to George Washington, which, to me, is a toss-up.” – Jack Nicholson
2. GW (2*) (high 1, low3) – “Wichita State victory will be the conferences best OOC win.” – Alan Kelly
3. Dayton (high 2, low 5) – “Flyers are 9-2 but who would know it?” – Steve DiMicelli
4. Davidson (high 3, low 5) – ” Eight game winning streak and counting. And by counting I mean it will continue if they knock off #5 Virginia. No pressure.” – Steve DiMicelli
5. Rhode Island (high 3, low 5) – “The second most intriguing team behind Davidson.” – Sam Taylor
6. La Salle (high 6, low 10) – “A brutal four-game stretch against power conference team and an unexpected overtime loss to American leaves La Salle with its less-than-exceptional record. Don’t be fooled, though; La Salle’s frontline, carried by Steve Zack and Jarrell Wright, can match up with any A-10 frontline.” – Jack Nicholson
7. UMass (high 6, low 12) – “The Minutemen are 0-5 against kenpom top-100s in non-conference play this season so far. They were 6-1 last year.” – Mat Shelton-Eide
8. Richmond (high 6, low 10) – “Missed 3 chances to get a signature OOC win. Home loss to Wake Forest may haunt them.” – Alan Kelly
9. St. Bonaventure (high 6, low 11) – “Per usual, SBU is underrated by most people. UMES game was a bad dream.” – Sam Taylor
10. Saint Joseph’s (high 7, low 10) – “Having lost three all-conference players, St. Joe’s has been up and down, as expected. The alarming thing, however, is how mightily the Hawks have struggled to score. SJU ranks 320th in the nation in points per game and are shooting less than 40% from the field including a miserable 25% from 3-point range.” – Chase Harrison
11. George Mason (high 8, low 12) – “Newcomers Shevon Thompson and Isaiah Jackson might yet save Paul Hewitt’s job.” – Alan Kelly
12. Saint Louis (high 9, low 12) – 8-4 is not a bad record for a team that lost close to everything from last year’s (regular season) A-10 championship squad. We will learn a lot more about Jim Crews’ revamped team in league play, though.” – Jack Nicholson
13. Duquesne (high 13, low 14) – “I was very bullish on the Dukes preseason, and they’ve been an abject failure so far.” – Alan Kelly
14. Fordham (high 13, low 14) –  “They don’t get moved ahead of the Dukes just because they played Howard more recently.” – Steve DiMicelli
