Fordham has started off the 2022-23 MBB season in fine form winning 7 out of their first 8 contests. The lone blemish being a road loss to the currently #11 Arkansas Razorbacks on their home court. In that contest, turnovers just doomed Fordham from the jump. The seven wins have all come on Fordhams home court as the team has done a wonderful job protecting the Rose Hill home base. The team has been resilient and determined over the course of November.
Coach Urgo & staff deserve a shout out for having the team prepared, and determined, mounting several second half comebacks over that stretch.
There is plenty to be optimistic about in regard to this team as they have made some amazing strides.
Scoring: Scoring has been balanced and deep with 3 starters averaging double digits per game. The always reliable Darius Quiesenberry averaging 17.0 ppg, The smooth as silk Khalid Moore (14.4 ppg) and the continually improving Kyle Rose at 10.3 ppg, who has hit several clutch 3's thus far this season. Knocking on the double digit door is Antrall Charlton at 9.1 ppg. Several other players have also been contributing a great deal, Rostyslav Novitskyi has played a significant role both on the boards and scoring in clutch situations. Will Richardson has improved game to game & will be a major contributor by the time A10 play rolls around. . Elijah Grey, another Freshman, has also shown some early flashes and is an intriguing talent. Zach Riley has also started to flash as he comes back from some early season set backs.
Overall, they are deep, balanced and aggressive. They are quickly becoming a very difficult team to defend. Scoring right now sits in the low 70's (71.5 ppg) but that really feels more like a floor at this point.
Defense: Team defense has been good thus far, at time showing brilliance and absolutely just smothering opponents, holding teams to 64.3 ppg during the month. There have been a few lapses, but that is to be expected as the group gets a better feel for the scheme and each other on the floor.
Arrows pointing up: Abdou Tsimbila is quickly becoming the human eraser on the defensive end averaging over three blocks per game, not to mention the numerous altered shots in the paint. He is a force to be reckoned with. His offensive game has clearly developed and continues to go straight up hill. As a scoring presence inside, he opens up the floor to every other player as well. I feel he will be a consistent double-double guy this season and will be in the running for A10 defensive player of the year. Will Richardson has been getting more & more playing time and has shown some immense talent. It looks like he will be a major factor this year with his silky smooth jumper & amazing quickness. Rostyslav Novitskyi has improved in every aspect of his game, scoring, defending & rebounding. He seems to improve in every outing. It would be awesome to see Rostyslav & Abdou on the floor together if they every need to go big. That would be a formidable front court to say the least.
The Sky is the Limit!: DQ, never seems to stop getting better. Khalid Moore can easily take over a game himself, Kyle Rose can be a game changer. Antrell Charlton, with his Carmelo like mid range game, gives Fordham scoring on all three levels. He is the X factor that can make all the difference.
Work in progress: We do not have a natural point guard. Charlton has done yoman's work in this reguard & DQ is an excellent ball handler, but that is an additional load he does not need. It will be interesting to see what developes in this situation, but besides this need, the team is rock solid. This has the potential be be a very good season on Rose Hill. If the current trends stay in place, we can be making a lot of noise come March!
Go Rams!
