February proved to be a productive month for Fordham's MBB. Posting a 5-2 A10 conference tally, bringing the season A10 record to 11-5, a school record with two games to play. Fordham is in a great position to finish in the top four and receive a double bye at next month's A10 Tournament at Barclay's Center. That would also be another first for Fordham in the A10.
February schedule also closed out with a long overdue retiring of Charlie Yelverton's #34, the standout forward from the 1970-71 squad. Charlie was an All-American forward on that squad, and as a sidenote, the other forward named All-American that year just happened to be Julius "Dr. J." Erwing from UMass. That is some pretty impressive company to keep. The 2022-23 squad is doing their best to wake up the echoes from that great year, and were able to net a win over Rhode Island playing in front of a number of members from that squad. Congratulations Charlie!
February saw the two most reliable scorers Darius Quiesenberry & Khalid Moore continue to perform exceptionally well. Darius passed the 2,000 point mark for his career. putting him in some very elite company in NCAA history. Khalid is rapidly approaching the 1,000 point level and may surpass it in the A10 tournament.
Darius averaged 16.7 ppg during February despite a low output night vs Richmond and Moore poured it on in February as well giving Fordham a great one two punch. Antrell Charlton has been a consistent, and clutch scorer with that sweet Melo like mid range game and has done a good job running the point. Abdou Tsimbila has been an absolute rock around the rim on both ends, Erasing over 50 shots YTD and has been excellent at offensive put backs. Rostyslav Novitskyi has had games were he absolutely controlled the paint and chipped in several double digit games in scoring. This combination in the front court has been very impressive this year. Kyle Rose continues his impressive play, shutting down the opponent's best scorer on a regular basis, he has also stroked some clutch 3's as well.
Will Richardson absolutely lit it up vs. VCU on a night where there were not a lot of highlights and turnovers just absolutely killed the Rams. He has a sweet stroke from 3 pt land and can drive to the hoop when needed. All those arrows are pointing up. Fellow Freshman Elijah Grey & Romad Dean both have given quality minutes as the season has progressed and made the team that much deeper, which will be necessary to make noise in the A10 Tournament.
February is a kind of slog it out month in Men's Basketball. It is a long season and it is this time of year where it shows. The game against Loyola Chicago seemed to personify this. It was a street fight, but they found a way to win. It encapsulated a lot of what has happened this year. Grit, determination & perseverance.
Coach Urgo & staff deserve kudo's for having these guys ready to go each night. They are a determined bunch and are fun to watch. They have elevated the program to where now Rose Thrill is one of the hottest tickets in town, no easy feat in NYC. Fans have been rewarded with all sorts of new standards, home wins that lead the NCAA, a sweep of St Bonnie for the first time in 16 years and a record setting 11-5 in conference play.
Two games left until Brooklyn and hopefully a double bye. A run through the A10 tournament and who knows where from there!
It is a great day to be a Ram!
