VCU’s unbeaten start to the season came to an end Thursday night as the Rams fell 69-66 in overtime to Seton Hall in the Charleston Classic opener. Despite leading for much of the game, VCU couldn’t overcome late-game miscues and a strong rebounding effort from the Pirates.
Shulga Shines, Jackson Returns
Max Shulga led the Rams with 20 points, shooting 6-of-14 from the field and 8-of-11 from the free-throw line. He added five rebounds and two steals, playing a key role in keeping VCU competitive. Zeb Jackson, making his season debut after missing four games with a broken hand, scored 15 points off the bench and recorded three steals. Joe Bamisile chipped in 13 points, five rebounds, and three assists.
Seton Hall’s Chaunce Jenkins was the standout for the Pirates, dropping 22 points, including a clutch jumper in overtime. David Tubek added a pivotal three-pointer late in the extra frame that extended Seton Hall’s lead and ultimately decided the game.
Missed Opportunities Down the Stretch
The Rams led by as many as eight points in the second half and appeared to be in control with under four minutes remaining, holding a 57-53 advantage. However, Seton Hall fought back, capitalizing on key possessions and limiting VCU’s offensive flow. Shulga sent the game to overtime with a layup in the final seconds of regulation, but the Rams struggled in the extra period, shooting just 1-of-8 from the field and failing to convert any of their five three-point attempts.
The Pirates took advantage of VCU’s cold shooting, dominating the glass with a 44-30 rebounding edge, including 11 offensive rebounds that led to crucial second-chance points. The Rams’ perimeter struggles were evident, connecting on just 24% (9-of-37) from beyond the arc.
What’s Next for VCU?
VCU will aim to bounce back on Friday, November 22, when they face Nevada in their second game of the Charleston Classic. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., and the game will stream on ESPN+.
For Rams fans, the early season loss serves as a reminder of the team’s potential and areas for improvement, particularly in rebounding and consistency from long range. With Atlantic 10 play on the horizon, VCU has a chance to sharpen their game and emerge stronger from this tough non-conference test.
