A little more than one week of the season is in the books, and most A10WBB teams have played about 3 games total, so it’s time to take a look at some stats! Now contrary to what my 3rd grade math teacher would tell you, I actually like numbers, and think there a lot we can learn from them even with a notably small sample size still. Here is a breakdown of how A-10 teams rank nationally in each of the major statistical categories (courtesy of NCAA.com). I have listed teams that fall in the top-100 of each category, as well as teams that makeup the bottom of the conference in the same category to give some context for what the top and bottom of the A-10 may look like, and see what we can learn!

So that’s a lot of numbers! But what does it all mean? First lets start with the good: Richmond, Saint Joseph’s and George Mason, the undisputed top three teams in the Atlantic 10 rank in the top-100 in many different categories, each with some notable strengths. In scoring offense, SJU and Mason both rank in the top-30, while Richmond checks in a little further down, but still very respectable. Defensively, Richmond and SJU tie for 39th in the nation, which Mason doesn’t quite crack the top-100, landing at 110 (57.3PPG). VCU has fallen from their #1 spot at one point last January, but still ranks 71st in the nation.
Both George Mason and Saint Joseph’s have done an excellent jobs turning teams over, as both are top-20 in turnover margin, and top-40 in turnovers per game. They also take care of the ball exceptionally well, with Mason ranking 17th and SJU 41st in fewest turnovers.
When it comes to three-point shooting, George Mason hasn’t been as hot as they started last year, but Duquesne and St. Bonaventure have been efficient from deep early on, as has VCU. Bench scoring is led by Mason, unsurprising given their balance and added depth from a year ago. Somewhat surprisingly, Loyola Chicago cracked top-60 in the nation in bench scoring, an area that Saint Joseph’s did notably rank much lower in (167th, 21.5PPG).
Not all stats however are created equal, nor do they always make sense. GW ranks 7th in the nation in free throw attempts per game (30.67), 18th in free throws made (20.33), but 207th in free throw percentage (66.30%).
Now to some of the less desirable ranks to be in. When it comes to offense, there are some notable teams struggling. Davidson ranks in the 250s and up in both assists per game and assist to turnover ratio, as well as 300th in points per game (55.0). UMass struggles to both score the ball (290th, 56.3) and field goal percentage (282nd, 36.72). Fordham has the fewest average points scored in the A-10 at 55.3, but also was notably missing Taylor Donaldson, the returning leading scorer in the Atlantic 10, for the first two games of the season before returning Tuesday night.
In contrast to Mason and SJU, Richmond has struggled to take care of the ball, ranking 271st (worst in the A-10) in turnovers per game (20.3)
So what can we take away from all of this? Stats at this point in the season can be easily inflated by blowout wins over non-D1 schools and low-major teams from one bid leagues. So take certain things with a grain of salt. Fordham’s offense will definitely improve once Taylor Donaldson get back to full strength. George Mason’s three point shooting will inevitably catch fire, and GW’s hot shooting and offensive output will undoubtedly return to the mean. However, there are also some notable areas to work on for teams hoping for greater success this season: Richmond has struggled with offensive rebounding and not turning the ball over. Duquesne, while having picked up a nice win over Princeton, and ranking well in other categories, struggles notably in shooting and free throw percentage, fouls, and rebounds. George Mason hasn’t defended or rebounded as well as they would have liked in the first week of the season, especially against Monmouth. It’s a very long season, and we’re just getting started. A lot of good tests for A-10 teams are on the horizon, and there’s a lot of basketball to still be played!
