Rams Fall Short in Salt Lake City: VCU’s NIT Run Ends with 74-54 Loss to Utah

Matt MortonBy Matt MortonMarch 28, 2024No Comments2 Mins Read

The VCU Rams’ (24-14) impressive NIT run came to an end on Wednesday night, falling to the Utah Utes (22-14) by a score of 74-54 in the quarterfinals. Despite a valiant effort, VCU couldn’t overcome Utah’s hot shooting and home-court advantage.

Utah’s Three-Point Barrage Sinks Rams

The Utes caught fire from beyond the arc, with Gabe Madsen leading the way with six three-pointers on his way to a game-high 18 points. Utah connected on 13 threes overall, compared to just five of 26 (19%) for VCU. This disparity proved too much for the Rams to overcome.

VCU’s Sean Bairstow led the Rams with 13 points, but no other VCU player reached double figures. The Utes, on the other hand, had three players score in double digits.

Looking Ahead

Despite the disappointing loss, VCU can take pride in a successful season. They made it to the Atlantic 10 conference tournament title and made a solid run to the NIT quarterfinals. With a core group of returning players, barring any transfer portal exits, the Rams will look to build on this experience and contend for another strong showing next season.

Final Thoughts

The VCU faithful will undoubtedly be disappointed with the loss, but the team displayed resilience and fight throughout the NIT. Coach Odom will have the opportunity to learn from this experience and develop his squad for the upcoming season. VCU fans can expect the Rams to be back and hungry for more next year.
