The Massachusetts Minutemen (18-10, 9-7 A-10) defeated the George Washington Revolutionaries (14-14, 3-12 A-10) 69-57 on Tuesday night. UMass completes the season series sweep over George Washington, but the Revolutionaries still hold a 46-32 lead over the Minutemen in the all-time series history.
Like the Minutemen’s game last Tuesday, they led wire-to-wire against the Revolutionaries with only one tie in the entire game. That one tie was when the score was 2-2 with just over eighteen minutes left in the first half, but after that point, UMass had full control of the game. The first half was very streaky for the Revolutionaries, and that allowed the Minutemen to take the lead and make it a comfortable lead. At one point in the first half, George Washington found themselves down by twenty-two points, but they cut that UMass lead down to nineteen points to go into halftime. When the second half came, it looked like the Revolutionaries were going to try and make a comeback, but the Minutemen put a stop to it quickly. UMass then got their lead up to twenty-five points about midway through the second half and started to go on cruise control, and never saw their lead slip into single digits. The Minutemen are now 9-1 coming off of a loss this season, and UMass is set to finish no worse than at 0.500 in conference play with two games left on the season.
The Revolutionaries had two players in double-figure scoring on Tuesday night. Darren Buchanan Jr. led the way for George Washington in his first game back from being out with 21 points and 7 rebounds, and Jacoi Hutchinson had 14 points to round out scorers in double digits. Trey Autry had 9 points, Maximus Edwards had 5 points and 5 rebounds, James Bishop IV had 4 points and 4 assists, and Babatunde Akingbola had 4 points and 5 rebounds to round out all scorers. The Revolutionaries shot 27.6% from the field in the first half but regrouped greatly in the second half by shooting 56.5% from the field.
The Minutemen had three players in double-figure scoring on Tuesday night. Matt Cross led the way for UMass with 17 points and 7 rebounds, Rahsool Diggins had 13 points, and Josh Cohen had 12 points to round out scorers in double digits. Jayden Ndjigue had 8 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 blocks, Robert Davis Jr. had 8 points and 3 rebounds, Daniel Hankins-Sanford had 5 points and 6 rebounds, Keon Thompson had 4 points and 4 assists, and Jaylen Curry had 2 points and 3 rebounds to round out all scorers. Marqui Worthy, Tyler Mason, Tarique Foster, and Jackson Cronin all saw playing time last night but did not score. The Minutemen shot 51.7% from the field for the entire game and went 33.3% from behind the three-point line.
