The George Mason Patriots (14-3, 5-1 A-10) defeated the Massachusetts Minutewomen (3-16, 1-6 A-10) 73-52 on Sunday afternoon. The Patriots have a 10-5 lead over the Minutewomen in the all-time series history.
The game started with the momentum being in the favor of UMass for the first quarter. The Minutewomen went 9-14 from the field (64.3%), and 3-3 from behind the arc, but after that quarter the Patriots were in complete control of the game. Mason was effective with shooting and rebounding the ball in the last three quarters, giving the Patriots full control.
The Patriots had three players in double figures for scoring. Sonia Smith led the way for Mason with 15 points, Zahirah Walton had 14 points, and Taylor Jameson had 10 points to round out all scorers in double digits. Kennedy Harris and Jazmyn Doster had 8 points apiece, Paula Suarez had 6 points, Amy O’Hara and Ta’Viyanna Habib each had 4 points, and Jada Brown and Nekhu Mitchell each had 2 points to round out all scorers for the Patriots.
The Minutewomen had two players in double figures for scoring. Kristin Williams led the way for UMass with 20 points which set a new career-high and Bre Bellamy had 11 points to round out all scorers in double digits. Lilly Ferguson had 6 points, Alexsia Rose and Chinenye Odenigbo had 4 points apiece, Tori Hyduke had 3 points, and Stefanie Kulesza and Mikenzie Jone each had 2 points apiece to round out all scorers for the Minutewomen.
Mason travels to the Smith Center to face their conference rival, the George Washington Revolutionaries (8-10, 1-5 A-10) on Wednesday, January 24th at 12pm. This will be the 44th meeting between these two teams, and the Revolutionaries have a 29-14 lead over the Patriots.
UMass travels down to Belk Arena to face the Davidson Wildcats (13-5, 3-4 A-10) on Wednesday, January 24th at 7pm. This will be the 14th meeting between these two teams, and the Minutewomen have a 9-4 lead over the Wildcats.
