Duquesne 54 St. Bonaventure 50: Numbers and Observations

Ray FlorianiBy Ray FlorianiJanuary 25, 2024No Comments3 Mins Read

St. Bonaventure suffered its fourth loss in the last five games. In the process, Duquesne earned their first A10 win of the season defeating the Bonnies 54-50 at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse. on Tuesday. The Bonnies dropped to 11-7 (2-4) while Duquesne is now 10-8 (1-5).

Possessions: 67

Offensive efficiency: Duquesne 81, St. Bona 75

Four Factors:

St. Bona Duquesne
eFG Pct. 29 38
FT Rate 41 61
OREB Pct. 41 32
TO Rate 24 22

Offensive offense. A defensive efficiency of 81 will get you many wins. Bonnies offensive efficiency of 75 will not win games, unless you hold the opposition to a lower figure. After Chad Venning opened up the scoring the Bonnies hit one of their next 16 attempts. At the half they trailed 22-15. For the game they shot 16 of 59 (27%). From long distance the Bonnies were 2 of 13 for a 15% showing.

Mika Adams-Woods sat out with an illness. Unfortunately for the Bonnies, no one took up the slack. Kyrell Luc, Moses Flowers and Daryl Banks III combined for 12 points on 2 of 27, a 7% rate (0 for 6 from three).

“When Kyrell, Daryl and Moses go for 2 for 27 you’re not going to win anything,” St. Bonaventure coach Mark Schmidt told TAPinto Greater Olean. “We fought at the end; we tried to go small, couldn’t beat anybody off the dribble. We couldn’t get anything going.”

Schmidt also noted the Bonnies won the points in the paint (24-10), second chance points (16-9) and fastbreak points (15-4). Poor shooting and 16 turnovers (an excessively high 24% TO rate) were negatives far outweighing the positives.

Kenpom.com MVP: Charles Pride. The Bona senior scored a game high 14 points adding four rebounds.

Assa Essamvous scored 12 points for the Bonnies. The sophomore forward grabbed a team high eight rebounds. Essamvous and Barry Evans, six points and four rebounds, led the late game surge for the Bonnies. Duquesne did not have a double figure scorer. Keith Lambrot’s Dukes were paced by Jimmy Clark’s nine points. Venning and Tre Williams of Duquesne shared game rebounding honors with eight each.

Opportunity lost. All turnovers are costly. For the second straight game, the Bonnies had a miscue that proved to be a dagger. A 14-1 run late made the game a one possession affair. Down three with 49 seconds remaining the Bonnies turned it over. Clark canned two free throws to get the margin back to five and for all intents, the rally ended.

Notes: Eleven of the last 17 games in this long standing series (70-62 in the Bonnies favor) have been decided by six points or less.

Kyrell Luc earned his first start of the season. Luc started in place of Mika Adams-Woods.

Bonnies did not hit a three pointer until eight minutes into the second half. They have connected from beyond the arc at least once in 180 straight games.

Next up is a meeting with Saint Joseph’s. Friday’s game at the Reilly Center will be televised nationally on ESPN2. Billy Lange’s Hawks are 13-6 and 3-3 in conference play. They dropped their first three A10 games before embarking on a three game win streak. Saint Joseph’s is coming off a 78-77 win at UMass on Tuesday. The previous Saturday they edged Duquesne 71-69 on Hawk Hill. They are second in offensive efficiency in A10 games at 111. Their 108 defensive mark places them eighth.

“We did what we needed to do on defense. Our offense was just abysmal.” – Mark Schmidt
