The Massachusetts Minutemen (5-2, 0-0 A-10) defeated interstate foe the UMass Lowell Riverhawks (6-3, 0-0 America East) 91-77 on Saturday afternoon. The Minutemen extend their lead in the all-time series history to 10-3 against the Riverhawks.
The start of Saturday’s game was back and forth until the Minutemen were able to take the lead and never look back with about 9 minutes left in the first half. For the Minutemen, Josh Cohen took over in the first half and helped UMass to get the lead. Going into the half, the Minutemen had a 14-point lead and were able to build it up to as many as 28 in the second half. In the second half, it was Rahsool Diggins who stepped up for the Minutemen to help them slam the door shut for any comeback attempts that were made by the Riverhawks.
The Minutemen had four different players score in double figures on Saturday afternoon. Cohen led all scorers in the game with 25 points and picked up 14 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals, and 2 blocks. Cohen earned a double-double on the day, which was his first one as a Minuteman. Diggins had 15 points, Matt Cross had 14 points, and Keon Thompson had 10 points to round off scorers in double digits. Daniel Hankins-Sanford had 8 points, Robert Davis Jr. had 7 points, Jaylen Curry had 6 points, and Marqui Worthy and Tarique Foster each had 2 points apiece to round out all scorers for the Minutemen. The Minutemen also had all available players play in the game on Saturday against the Riverhawks.
Next up for the Minutemen is traveling down to Springfield on Saturday, December 16th, where they will face former Atlantic 10 member and now Big 12 member the West Virginia Mountaineers (4-5, 0-0 Big 12) in the Basketball Hall of Fame Classic. The projected tip-off for UMass is slated for 6:30pm and will be televised on ESPNU. The St. Bonaventure Bonnies (7-2, 0-0 A-10) will play against the #11 Florida Athletic Owls (7-2, 0-0 American) before the UMass game at 4pm also on ESPNU.
