Sydney Taylor Almost Near-Perfect Game Helps UMass Defeat Dayton

The Massachusetts Minutewomen (15-4, 5-1 A-10) easily defeated the Dayton Flyers (3-15, 2-5 A-10) 79-60 on Sunday afternoon. Dayton still leads in the series history 17-13. UMass got its first win at UD Arena since the 2007 season. UMass extends the season win streak to four games, while the Flyers are now on a three-game losing streak.

UMass got off to a hot start against Dayton, and never looked back on the Flyers for the rest of the game. By the end of the first quarter, UMass was leading 18-13, with 14 of the 18 points scored by Sydney “Swish” Taylor. Going into halftime, UMass led 39-22, at this point, Taylor had 23 of the Minutewomen’s 39 points.

Taylor ended the game with 30 points, just 2 points shy of her career high. She shot 11-12 from the field and 7-8 behind the 3-point line. Sam Breen earned her 51st career double-double against the Flyers scoring 16 of her 18 points in the second half. Breen also tallied 11 rebounds besides the 18 points. Her 11 rebounds in the game on Sunday surpassed 1,000 rebounds in her career.

Besides Taylor and Breen leading the way in scoring, Makennah White scored 9 points and 3 rebounds, and Destiney Philoxy scored 8 points and 6 assists. Almost every Minutewomen that was available to play in the game, did get to play in the game for a few minutes towards the end of the game.

For the Flyers, Mariah Perez led the way in scoring with 15 points and 7 rebounds. Sydney Freeman (13 points) and Destiny Bohanon (14 points) were the only other Dayton players that scored in double digits.

Next up for the Flyers, they face the Duquesne Dukes (13-7, 3-4 A-10) on Wednesday, January 25th at 7pm at UD Arena. Dayton leads Duquesne in the series history 25-21.

Next up for the Minutewomen, they travel back home to the Mullins Center to face the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Rams (5-13, 2-4 A-10) for Field Trip Day on January 26th at 12pm. VCU leads the series history 9-5. UMass is looking to extend the win streak on the season to 5 games while VCU is looking to snap a 2 game-losing streak.
