Duquesne defeats Dayton, opens Cooper Fieldhouse with 69-64 win

PITTSBURGH — The Duquesne Dukes (7-6, 6-5 A10) opened their new arena, the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse, with a 69-64 win Tuesday against the Dayton Flyers (10-5, 6-4 A10). The Dukes used a fast start to outlast a Flyer comeback bid. The arena is situated on the former site of the AJ Palumbo Center and has been undergoing extensive renovations for almost two years. In fact, it had been 694 days since the Dukes played a home game on campus on Mar. 9, 2019, the final game for the Palumbo Center, which ended in a 78-67 loss for the Dukes against the Flyers.

Dayton shot 10 for 28 from the field in the first half, compared to Duquesne’s 16 for 28, as the Dukes took a 39-24 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Flyers shot just under 50 percent in the second half and Duquesne missed all seven from beyond the three point arc.

Marcus Weathers and Michael Hughes each had double-digit points with 20 and 13, respectively, with Hughes recording a double-double with 14 rebounds as well.

Jalen Crutcher led the Flyers with 28 points, while Mustapha Amzil recorded his own double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
