In the nightcap of Wednesday’s Atlantic Ten opening round doubleheader, Fordham defeated George Washington 72-52 at Barclays Center. It was the third time Fordham (9-22, 2-16) emerged victorious over the Colonials 12-20 (6-12) this time, it ended their season.
Possessions: 67- A knock down drag it out, deliberate paced game you would expect from Jeff Neubauer’s Rams.
Offensive efficiency: Fordham 107, George Washington 78- Fordham has been effective on defense. On this afternoon, they found an offense as well.
George Washington was limited to 48 per cent shooting from two point range and a paltry 26 per cent from beyond the arc. The defensive will was further imposed as GW was forced into an excessive 26 per cent turnover rate.
Leading scorers:
George Washington- Armel Potter 24 points. The senior guard earned Kenpom MVP honors shooting 8 of 14 (57 per cent) from the floor. Coach Jamion Christian did not have another player in double figures.
Fordham- Jalen Cobb 15 points. Cobb knocked down three from beyond the arc. He was one of four Rams to post double figures in scoring. Efficiency on offense and balance. Better late than never for the Rams.
Fordham efficiency on offense definitely aided by shooting 63 per cent from two and 35 per cent from three. Add in an 18 per cent turnover rate and the Ram offense was running on all cylinders.
What’s next? For the Colonials, back to DC and recruiting. Christian will get it done at Foggy Bottom. Guaranteed. This is a season he may want in the rear view mirror as fast as possible.
For Fordham a Thursday evening meeting with Duquesne. Coaches get nervous by nature. Keith Dambrot of Duquesne has a right to have pre game butterflies. Duquesne swept Fordham but was tested both times out. First was a two point overtime win in Pittsburgh. A month later the Dukes exited Rose Hill with a hard fought 59-54 decision. Thursday’s contest could prove interesting.
