Richmond dismantles Boston College

The Richmond Spiders are 6-1 after defeating the Boston College Eagles 64-44. The Spiders were led by fantastic defensive play as they forced 18 Boston College turnovers.  Without Grant Golden, Richmond didn’t seem to miss a beat, which make things that much more exciting when he is cleared to return.  Offensively, the Spiders were led by Jacob Gilyard who tallied 22 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, and 5 steals. Blake Francis was right behind him with 18 points.  The Eagles couldn’t get anything going on the offensive side of the ball, especially in the 2nd half.  Richmond held them to 18 points in the final 20:00 as they shot 29.1% overall.

Spiders stepped up

Nathan Cayo went down late in the 1st half appearing to be in a ton of pain, but returned to action and started the 2nd half.  Cayo had 9 points & 4 rebounds in 25:09 of playing time.  Souleymane Koureissi also filled a hole that the Spiders needed today, as he  scored 2 points and 1 rebound in 13:33. The one who sticks out most to me is Tyler Burton.  This kid had himself a ball game, registering 4 points and 5 total rebounds off the bench.  He provided constant energy for the Spiders, who were already shorthanded without Golden. Nick Sherod had an off night, as he shot 1-9 from the field, including 0-5 from 3pt range, but it didn’t phase the Spiders as they had others step up around him.

What’s next for Richmond?

The Spiders are back in action this Tuesday night as they travel to play the Hampton Pirates, in Hampton, VA.  Tip off is scheduled for 7:00 and will be streamed on ESPN+ nationally.  A major concern for the Spiders was how they would come out without Grant Golden, and they only further proved the amount of depth they have.  This Spider team is geared up for a solid run in A-10 play, as long as they stay healthy.
