Welcome to A10 Talk’s Preseason Top 25 Player Countdown for the 2018-19 season. Each day, we’ll be publishing a new article counting down our best 25 players for the coming season, as voted on by our staff of writers. Today, we feature #4 Josh Cunningham of Dayton.
What He’s Done
An Atlantic 10 preseason All-Conference First Team selection, Josh Cunningham is looking to have a monster senior season. As Dayton’s lone captain in 2017-18, Cunningham became a clear leader for the Flyers. Establishing himself as one of the most consistent players in the country, the redshirt junior put up impressive numbers night in and night out. Averaging 15.6 points and 8.4 rebounds per game, Cunningham was a double-double machine for Dayton. The 6’7″ big man recorded double-doubles in ten games; including a 29 point, 18 rebound performance in a win over Georgia State. Possibly Cunningham’s most impressive stat, however, was his 65% shooting from the field. Putting up consistent and efficient numbers last year, Dayton’s senior leader is looking for more of the same in 2018-19.
What He’ll Do
With what should be a much-improved supporting cast around him, Cunningham and the Flyers are looking for bigger things this year. While Cunningham would love to win A-10 Player of the Year, his primary goal winning a conference title and returning to the NCAA tournament. In order for Dayton to do that, Cunningham will have to continue his impressive play from a season ago. With freshman forward Obadiah Toppin ready to go and Ryan Mikesell returning from injury, Cunningham will have some new help down low. I expect Cunningham to put up some remarkable numbers this year and for the Flyers to improve substantially as a whole.
