Welcome to A10 Talk’s Preseason Top 25 Player Countdown for the 2018-19 season. Each day, we’ll be publishing a new article counting down our best 25 players for the coming season, as voted on by our staff of writers. Today, we feature #10 Grant Golden of Richmond.
What He’s Done
Following a breakout freshman year, Richmond Spiders’ forward Grant Golden has climbed into the No. 10 spot in our Atlantic 10 preseason player rankings. A 6’10” big man out of Winchester, Virginia, Golden received over a dozen offers before committing to the home-state Spiders. Averaging 15.6 points and 6.7 rebounds per game a season ago, Golden exploded as a freshman. The Richmond forward recorded five double-doubles over the course of the 2017-18 season and scored over 20 points in ten different games. In addition to his points and rebounds, Golden blocked 39 shots last year (1.2 per game). Without a doubt, the Winchester product showed everyone that he has become one of the A-10’s best big men.
What He’ll Do
Entering his sophomore season, Golden has clearly become the leader of the Spiders. However, not many are picking Richmond to have a great year in 2018-19. In order for the Spiders to pull off some upsets garner some respect, they will need Golden to bring his “A game” night in and night out. Despite the impressive numbers he put up last season, the 6’10” forward does have a couple areas he can improve upon. Last year Golden made just 22 of 80 attempted threes and shot 62.5% from the foul line. If Golden is able to bump up his shooting numbers in 2018-19, it could help spark some of his teammates. I fully expect Golden to take another step in his development this year and carry the load for the Richmond Spiders.

Grant Golden was a redshirt freshman last year. So this year he’s a redshirt Sophomore, not a junior even though its his third year in school. Credibility of the writer takes a hit.
