Bonnies Prevail in Recruiting Battle, Land Coveted Big Man

Joel RevoBy Joel RevoMay 21, 20181 Comment1 Min Read

The Bonnies got their second win against Syracuse in the last six months tonight when blossoming big man Osun Osunniyi announced his commitment at the Putnam Science Academy National Championship banquet. “Double O” tops off the Bonnies 2018 recruiting class, and joins Amadi Ikpeze as the only other center on the team.

Although the Bonnies lost three senior guards and a promising freshman last season, it feels as though they’ve already reloaded. They’ll have six new eligible players next year. Joining Osun will be Jalen Poyser, Kyle Lofton (Osun’s teammate at PSA), Dom Welch, Melkisedek Moureaux, and Alpha Okoli. This seems to be Schmidt’s best recruiting class yet, and will go a long way in maintaining the success that the program has had during the past six years.

Osun will undoubtably get minutes right away, and will hopefully be the rim protector that they’ve been lacking since Youssou Ndoye’s departure.

Today was a great day for Bonnies fans, and a tough one for ‘Cuse fans, who not only lose out on a recruit, but also hear that star guard Tyus Battle is likely to remain in the NBA Draft.

Now, we wait. Only 5 1/2 months until the season starts.

Schmidt seems to have a steady open line to some non-traditional recruits. But “Double O” better grow up some — at 6’10” and a strapping 180 pounds, he’s in for some hard knocks underneath. Schmidt does more with less better than anyone I’ve seen.
