Duquesne guard Rene Castro will remain at the school for his senior season. ESPN’s Jeff Goodman shared the news on his Twitter account today.
Castro had originally intended to transfer from Duquesne, announcing on April 10 on Twitter that he decided on concluding his collegiate career elsewhere.
Castro began his college career at Butler, but after appearing in only 12 games for the Bulldogs, Castro decided to leave the Big East powerhouse to continue his career elsewhere. After sitting out the 2014-15 campaign at Duquesne, Castro appeared in 17 games for the Dukes in 2015-16, averaging 7.6 minutes per game.
This past season, Castro was a key contributor for the Dukes off of the bench, appearing in 29 contests and averaging 19.1 minutes per game. Castro scored a career-high 26 points in a November 16 win over St. Francis (PA). For the season, the combo guard upped his points per game average from 2.6 to 7.1 and shot 41.7 from the field.
Castro’s recommitment aids the Dukes, who currently foster a thin backcourt. Mike Lewis II and Tarin Smith will presumably start and see most of the minutes at the guard positions for Duquesne next season, with Castro and incoming freshman Eric Williams, Jr. coming off of the bench for Coach Keith Dambrot.
Freshman guard Spencer Littleson announced on May 4 that he intends to transfer from Duquesne.
However, the following season, Dambrot’s squad will receive an influx of much-needed backcourt depth. Transfers Craig Randall II (Memphis) and Tavian Dunn-Martin (Akron) will be eligible for the 2018-19 campaign after sitting out this coming season due to NCAA transfer rules.
