Atlantic 10 Saturday Preview: Dayton and VCU with road tests

Daniel FrankBy Daniel FrankJanuary 14, 20171 Comment4 Mins Read

After an off night for the conference on Friday, they’re back Saturday with five nationally televised games! While some of these games may not look great on paper, they certainly will shake up the standings for teams in the middle of the pack. So grab your remote, and have the “last” button handy, and get ready for some channel flipping between some intriguing matchups!

Duquesne vs Dayton | 12 ET | CBSSN

The Flyers will look to bounce back from a 12 point loss to the hands of UMass in their last outing, but a potential trap game awaits. While some people may snicker at the idea of Duquesne being a trap game, this has the potential to be just that. For starters, instead of playing the game in their on-campus arena, the Dukes will host this one at PPG Paints Arena, in downtown Pittsburgh. The Dukes have already scored one huge win in this arena this season, taking down crosstown rival Pitt in The City Game 64-55 back in early December. Plus the Dukes nearly scored a win against VCU and La Salle, two of the A-10’s top teams. Don’t sleep on this game.

Saint Joseph’s vs Richmond | 12:30 ET | NBCSN

The surprise of conference play this season has been Richmond, currently tied for first place at 4-0, with wins over Davidson and St. Bonaventure. Seriously, raise your hand if you saw that coming. Saint Joseph’s, on the other hand, are right in the thick of things, sitting at 2-2, and in search of their first good win of the new year. It’ll be a tall task for the Hawks, without leading scorer Shavar Newkirk who is out for the season with a torn ACL.

Davidson vs VCU | 2 ET | CBSSN

Quite possibly the best game of the day, features two teams in two entirely different situations. VCU is red hot, coming off a 30 point win over George Washington on Wednesday, and sits at 4-0, tied for first place in the A-10. Davidson, sitting a 1-3, is a team much better than their record shows. The Wildcats’ three conference loses were by a combined 12 points, most recently falling by six points at home to Fordham. This has not looked like the Davidson team that game North Carolina and Kansas a run for their money, but expect that all to change Saturday. Buckle up for what should be a great one!

George Mason vs Saint Louis | 2:30 ET | NBCSN

The 12-5 (yes, you read that correctly) with have a good chance to move to 3-2 in conference play, with what should be an easy game against the 0-4 Billikens. But with George Mason, you never quite know what to expect. Nonetheless, expect the Patriots to win by 15+ points.

St. Bonaventure vs Fordham | 4:30 ET | NBCSN

The Rams will look to build on a huge road win at Davidson, and will try to go into Olean and steal one from the Bonnies. Easier said than done, I’m aware. This is a St. Bonaventure team that already has quality wins over George Mason and UMass, and will look to improve to 3-2, and claim a spot in the upper tier of the standings. Fordham, on the other hand could move right back into the thick of things, if they can pull out a win and improve to 2-3. Either way, it’s clear to say that this game will highly effect the A-10 standings, and will be one you won’t wanna miss.
