VCU added another piece to their future when landing a commitment from ESPN top-100 power forward Mayan Kiir Monday afternoon. The 6’9 big man ranks No.95 in ESPN’s 2017 player rankings and gives the Rams their second ESPN top-100 in their incoming class, joining ESPN No.99 point guard, Lavar Batts. The two are joined by ESPN four-star Sean Mobley, a versatile 6’9 forward and 6’7 250-lb bruiser, Marcus Santos-Silva, a consensus three-star recruit.
The foursome will join Maine transfer Issac Vann (16.4 ppg) as the five new faces to help the Rams reload from a team that is set to graduate four key pieces in Mo Alie-Cox, JeQuan Lewis, Jordan Burgess and Doug Brooks.
Will Wade has continued the high level of recruiting established by former head coach Shaka Smart at VCU. After taking over the job following two seasons rebuilding UT Chattanooga, the new Rams head coach had to quickly assemble a 2015 class. Only three-star St. John’s decommit, Samir Doughty, remains from that group. Wade followed his 2015 scramble for a strong 2016 group highlighted by ESPN’s No.59 player in the class, De’Riante Jenkins, as well as Malik Crowfield, a now-freshman who is drawing rave reviews from VCU’s coaching staff and cracked the starting lineup his first game with the Rams.
VCU will have one scholarship remaining in the 2017 class but don’t expect Will Wade to use it. The head coach is likely to hold on to his final scholarship for 2017 for potential use on impact transfer.
