The Duquesne Dukes recently received a huge commitment to jumpstart their 2017 recruiting class. Jamari Wheeler, a 6’1″ 3-star point guard from Florida, announced on his official visit that he will play college basketball at Duquesne. With star guards Micah Mason and Derek Colter graduating last season, the Dukes desperately need a new young talent to emerge as the new leader. While Wheeler will have to finish his senior year at The Rock School in Gainesville before heading to Duquesne, he could see playing time as a freshman next season.

If his high school’s history has anything to do with the type of player Wheeler will become, the Dukes picked up an absolute steal. The Rock, the small Christian high school Wheeler attends, continuously produces big time basketball talent. In fact, players like Joel Embiid and Scottie Wilbekin both played for The Rock just years ago. Playing for a school that traditionally molds basketball stars can only mean good things for Wheeler and Duquesne.
When I asked Jamari about why he chose Duquesne over other schools like Buffalo and Towson, he said, “I like everything about it. It’s like a home from home and I also love that it’s in the A-10.” Wheeler also said he likes Duquesne’s academics and referred to his future Duke teammates as “amazing.” One thing is for certain, Jamari can’t wait to show what he can do for the Dukes. Look for Wheeler to lead Duquesne in the future and do big things in the Atlantic 10.
