Freshman Focus is an A10talk series that takes a look at some of the incoming freshman for the upcoming 2016-17 season.We take a closer look at some of the more talented first year players who will take the court for the first time next season.
Player Profile:
Tareq Coburn comes to the Bonnies from renowned Benjamin Cardozo High School. Hailing from Rosedale, New York, the 6’5 shooting guard was a key player for Cardozo. In his senior season, Coburn averaged 19 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists. Playing under PSAL’s all-time winningest coach Ron Naclerio, Coburn helped lead Cardozo to a 27-3 record. Coburn has been featured in the New York Post and was ranked No. 8 on NYCHoops.net on their Top 10 prospects for 2016 list.
His main weapon is his 3-point game, something that was on full display when he scored 21 points and drained 5 threes against Christ The King. In addition, he’s a long defender adept at knocking the ball loose and finishing in transition. He’s also a volume shooter which can limit his consistency, but when he’s on — he has the ability to win games. Coburn turned down offers from Iona, Farleigh Dickinson and fellow A-10 team Fordham to join the Bonnies.
Potential Impact:
Coburn enters a situation that’s already stacked. Star guard Jaylen Adams returns for his junior season and will look to make a case of being the A-10 player of the year. Alongside him, 3-and-d specialist Idris Taqqee will look to expand his role and scorer Matt Mobley will try to fill the shoes of the beloved Marcus Posley. Behind them is Nelson Kaputo, who will look to improve after an up-and-down freshman season.
Most years, if Coburn came to Bona’s he’d get playing time right a way. But this is arguably one of the deepest teams they’ve had this decade. However, Coburn’s shooting and defense could push Kaputo. But truthfully, Coburn will likely see limited playing time this season. But, one thing is going his way. Coburn is a late bloomer. He’s only been playing basketball for a few years, meaning the Bonnies potentially stole a player that’s much better than his recruiting stars would tell you. In fact, multiple scouting reports on Coburn say he has the potential to grow into a mid-major “star.” Let’s not jump the gun, but if Coburn can put his raw ability on display, he could end up as an excellent player for the Bonnies.
