Freshman Focus is an A10 Talk series that takes a look at some of the incoming freshman for the 2016-17 season. We take a closer look at some of the more talented first year players who will take the court for the first time next season.
Player Profile
Lorenzo Edwards is a 6-7, 200 lb. power forward out of Lake Forest High School in Lake Forest, Illinois. He’ll be one of three freshmen joining the Hawks next season and should play a crucial role on the interior. Along with incoming freshman forward Gerald Blount, Lorenzo Edwards should help revitalize a Saint Joseph’s frontcourt that hasn’t had a lot of depth. Edwards’ father was a former NBA player and college hooper at DePaul in Chicago. Lorenzo committed to Saint Joseph’s over A-10 rival George Mason.
Edwards was the News-Sun 2015-16 Boys Basketball Player of the Year in the Chicagoland area. His impact in high school was impressive, notching 20 double-doubles his senior year with Lake Forest. At 6-7, Edwards has the ability to drive to the hoop and hit jumpshots with consistency. He’s a beast on the glass which will be huge for the Hawks who lose top rebounders Isaiah Miles and DeAndre’ Bembry.
Potential Impact
Edwards could immediately help replace a void left by departing stars Isaiah Miles and DeAndre’ Bembry. His ability to clean up the glass will help the Hawks immensely, and given Saint Joseph’s lack of frontcourt depth, it’d make sense for Lorenzo Edwards to see a lot of court time next year. Saint Joseph’s won the 2016 A-10 Tournament Championship, and even though the Hawks lose a lot of key pieces, solid additions like Edwards will help to give them a lift in the near future.
