Freshman Focus: Charlie Brown Jr. (Saint Joseph’s)

Grant LabedzBy Grant LabedzAugust 13, 2016No Comments2 Mins Read

Freshman Focus is an A10talk series that takes a look at some of the incoming freshman for the upcoming 2016-17 season. We take a closer look at some of the more talented first year players who will take the court for the first time next season.

Player Profile

Charlie Brown is one of 4 incoming freshmen for Saint Joseph’s this season and is one of 2 incoming shooting guards. Brown will join freshman Nick Robinson in the backcourt and will likely see plenty of playing time at the 2.  Brown comes in at 6-6, 185 lbs. and played high school at St. Thomas More School in Philadelphia. Having offers from a number of schools on the east coast, including VCU and La Salle, Brown picked Coach Martelli and the Hawks.

Brown is a lethal outside shooter who can be relied upon from three all season long. His ability to knock it down from three will be huge for a team that loses great shooting threats in DeAndre’ Bembry, Isaiah Miles, and Aaron Brown. At 6-6, he is a nightmare to guard on the wing because he can drive to the hoop in addition to knocking it down from just about anywhere. He’s got a great mid-range game as well, so expect him to be a zone-breaker with some catch-and-shoot jumpers right inside the three point line.

Potential Impact

Since the Hawks lost a lot of talent from last year’s team, Brown could be an immediate starter under Phil Martelli. Saint Joseph’s returns talented point guards in Shavar Newkirk and LaMarr Kimble but lacks much depth at the 2. Brown could double as a backcourt threat and a wing player with James Demery on the floor as well. Incoming freshman Nick Robinson could see a lot of playing time at the 2 as well, but I’d expect Charlie Brown to get the slight nod as the potential starter. With this addition, Saint Joseph’s will have one of the better backcourts in the conference, and they’ll need to shine at the top of the key because the Hawks lack much depth down low. Brown is one of those players that could easily score 10+ points per game his freshman year and turn into a big-time contributor.
