Richmond draws Maryland in the first round of the 2016 Barclays Center Classic

Grant LabedzBy Grant LabedzMay 31, 20161 Comment2 Mins Read

It was reported by CBS Sports on Tuesday that Richmond would be facing Maryland in the first round of the 2016 Barclays Center Classic in Brooklyn, New York. The venue will be no stranger to the Spiders who have played their last 4 A-10 Championship Tournaments there with the rest of the league. The winner of the first round will go on to face the winner of Kansas State and Boston College. Last year’s tournament champion was Cincinnati who took down the A-10’s own George Washington in a close game.

With a solid array of returning seniors, it seems that Richmond could be a team to look out for in the A-10 next season. T.J. Cline, Marshall Wood, and ShawnDre’ Jones will all be back, and some young talent will certainly give the Spiders a boost next year. Winning a tournament like this could give Richmond a huge advantage before it heads into a difficult Atlantic 10 Conference season.

Maryland will be no easy opponent in the first round. The Terrapins lose a lot of frontcourt talent to the NBA, but Melo Trimble’s decision to return to school is huge for this Maryland program. With Melo Trimble, Jaylen Brantley, and Jared Nickens, Maryland will have one of the best backcourts in the Big Ten next season. The Terps will also have Duquesne transfer LG Gill and senior center Damonte Dodd. Maryland could easily be a Top 25 team this year, and this is a big opportunity for Richmond to get a resume-building win.
