Hewitt out at George Mason

Randy ClokeBy Randy ClokeMarch 16, 2015No Comments2 Mins Read

In a press release this morning, George Mason Athletic Director Brad Edwards announced that men’s basketball head coach, Paul Hewitt, was being let go.

Hewitt’s record at Mason sits at 66-67, as his two most recent seasons at the helm resulted in 20+ losses in each. His first two seasons in Fairfax saw two 20+ win campaigns and one run in the CBI to the championship game.

But, for Edwards–now in his second year leading the GMU athletic department–this simply wasn’t enough.

Edwards said that “Mason made a significant commitment to its athletic programs, especially men’s basketball, when the university moved to the Atlantic 10 Conference two years ago…The university has high expectations for the program and thus determined a change was needed.”

Since moving to the A10, Hewitt has compiled a record of 20-42, including 8-26 during the conference slate.

No details regarding his contract were announced. His deal had one final year left through the 2015-2016 season.

Who do you think will be up next at Mason? As soon as we hear, we’ll be sure to report back. And, while we’re not ones to start rumors, at least one writer thinks Edwards would be wise to consider this guy, among others.
