The Bonnies of St. Bonaventure exited Belk Arena victorious last night after delivering a buzzer-beating upset of the Davidson Wildcats to hand Bob McKillop’s squad their first two-game losing streak of the season.
St. Bonaventure led most of the first half before Davidson grabbed the lead with just under four minutes remaining in the first stanza, taking a 33-29 lead into halftime. The Wildcats did not surrender that lead until a Marcus Posley three gave SBU a 49-46 lead with 6:41 left to play.
St. Bonaventure held that lead most of the remainder of the game until Davidson’s Payton Aldridge drilled a three-pointer to give the Wildcats a one-point lead with just 4.8 ticks on the clock.
From there Marcus Posley was forced to take matters into his own hands, inbounding the ball to Youssou Ndoye who immediately handed it back for a coast-to-coast last hurrah that ended with a foul line floater to stun the 4,000-plus fans in attendance Wednesday night, giving St. Bonaventure the 62-61 road win.
The basket capped off a great night for Posley who finished with a game-high 19 points.
Posley was one of three Bona starts in double digits. Youssou Ndoye joined him with a 16-point, 12-rebound double-double while Dion Wright added 14 points on 6-10 shooting. Freshman Jalen Adams added nine points, seven rebounds and a team-high six assists. The Bonnies got just two points off their bench in the win.
The Wildcats were without sophomore star, Jack Gibbs, for the fourth consecutive game. Davidson is 2-2 over that span, blowing out Dayton to open that stretch in impressive fashion but have struggled as of late without the sophomore’s services.
The Cats needed OT to defeat George Mason on the road, narrowly avoiding what could just as easily have been a three-game losing streak.
St. Bonaventure returns home to host a banged up No.18 VCU squad who will likely be without both their best players. The Rams lost Briante Weber to a season-ending knee injury and saw leading scorer Treveon Graham exit early Wednesday night after re-aggravating an high ankle sprain.
Davidson will look to get back on track with two straight home games against Duquesne and George Mason.
