Spiders Squeak By Colonials

Spiders Defeat George Washington

Washington, D.C. —

The Richmond Spiders defeated the George Washington Colonials 73-70 at the Charles E. Smith Center in Foggy Bottom.  The Spiders were led by strong performances from Blake Francis & Nick Sherod.  Blake finished the night shooting 7-15 from the field, and knocked down 2 3’s.  Nick Sherod broke out of his slump, scoring 15 points which were huge in tonight’s final.  The Spiders shot 25-59 (42.9%) as a unit tonight.

Fending Off the Colonials

This game was no cake walk as the final score indicates.  Richmond began the half on a nice run, getting up by as many as 12.  George Washington did not go away, and cut the lead to just 3, where it ultimately stayed.  Armel Potter scored 17 points tonight for the Colonials, along with 17 from Maceo Jack.  The Spiders shot 9-21 from deep compared to the Colonials 8-23.  Richmond only turned the ball over 7 times, while George Washington coughed it up 14 times.  Tyler Burton had another solid performance, scoring 8 points and snagging 5 rebounds coming off the bench.

Bubble Not Popped Yet

The Spiders escape another Fordham like scare on the road tonight, but the important thing is that they walked out victorious.  Listed in Joe Lunardi’s “First Four Out” as of today, a win was crucial for their at-large hopes.  If the Spiders can take care of business in their remaining 3 games of conference play, and make some noise in Brooklyn, I like their chances.

Road Ahead

Up next for Richmond will be a date with the Massachusetts Minutemen at the Robins Center on Saturday (6:00).  They will then host the Davidson Wildcats next Wednesday, before closing their season in Pittsburgh against Duquesne on March 6th.  As always, be sure to stay up to date with all things Richmond basketball on Twitter at @AustinDaisey11 & @A10Talk.  We will see you Saturday night Spider Nation!
