After a slow start in A10 play, Fordham has really turned it on, winning the last 5 games to wrap up a 6-2 A10 slate. Fordham currently sits at fourth place in the A10 with 9 games to go. A double bye is not out of the question for the upcoming A10 tournament, a first for Fordham in the A10.
It all starts on the defensive end for this squad. It is relentless and it shows. When it gets down to the under 8 timeout, the opposition just melts. It all starts on the ball with Kyle Rose, the odds on favorite for defensive player of the year. On the back end we have the duel human erasers Abdou Tsimbila & Rostyslav Novitskyi. Two very intimidating shot blockers. The team concept of defense has keep them in several games this year and has enabled them to pull out several victories. It is fun to watch. Team free throw shooting has been essential as well as they have been dropping them at a +75%+ clip this year.
On the offensive end, they continue to be led by Darius Quisenberry who is averaging 17.2 ppg. Darius changes his game as the situation demands. In the St. Louis game, he was just a deadly scorer, dropping 27 on the Billikens while going 9 for 9 from the charity stripe. Khalid Moore has been right there as well, adding 15.3 ppg. When needed Khalid has jumped up his scoring deep into the +20ppg. At times, he truly seems unstoppable and has a smoothness to his game that is almost artistic. It feels like when his game is on, no one can stop him. Antrell Charlton has been running the point extremely well while adding 7.9 ppg as well, all the while leading the team in assists. Will Richardson has jumped into the starting line up from time to time and has not disappointed. He has shown he can put the team on his back and just light up the scoreboard. His upside seems limitless at this point. Fellow Freshman Elijah Grey & Romad Dean have both shown flashes of exceptional talent. They have been taking on a bigger role as the season has progressed, each adding big plays at different times.
Rose Hill has come alive once again, as getting a ticket is becoming harder & harder. The "Herd" as the student section is known, has actually been a difference maker. The energy they bring into the building is intimidating to the opposition and it shows. It is a far cry from when Rose Hill was 3/4 empty, It is great to see and hopefully it continues.
Anyone who has followed Fordham over the years has always known it is a sleeping giant for a number of reasons. Those reasons now seem to be in the past. The sleeping giant is awakening and it is a thrill to see it happen. Something special is going on at "Rose Thrill" and we should all enjoy it. It also seems that a solid base has been developed and this can be more of the norm than the exception. It is truly just great to see.
At 18-4, this great group of young men are knocking on the door of the unforgettable 1970-71 team. They have the ability to have future generations talking about the thrilling 2022-23 squad for a long, long time.
Congrats to Coach Urgo & his staff for the job done thus far and a huge hat tip to AD Kull who saw the same potential a lot of us have and has been instrumental in making it happen thus far. Fordham is playing meaningful games in late January & February, and it is wonderful.
February will tell us all we need to know about this squad and it starts as road warriors at Richmond.
To quote Coach Urgo "It's a great day to be a Ram!"
