Lavar Batts of Robinson High School in Concord, North Carolina told CBS Sports that he’d committed to VCU on Saturday. The Class of 2017 point guard comes in at 6-2 and weighs 165 pounds. Batts committed to Will Wade and the Rams over Butler, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. Rivals and ESPN both have the rising senior as a 4 star recruit, and he ranks 99th overall in ESPN’s Top 100 for the class of 2017. Batts becomes the first player from the class of 2017 to commit to VCU.

Batts’ commitment is big for the Rams because it provides Will Wade’s team with a reliable point guard once JeQuan Lewis graduates at the end of this season. Jonathan Williams has two more seasons with VCU, but once he’s gone, Batts will be the only 1 on the roster. That said, he should have an immediate impact when he plays for the Rams for the first time in 2017.
Batts has a non-conventional jumpshot form, but it works wonders for him. He knocks down three pointers with ease, and when he gets past his defender on the baseline, he’s going to take it to the rack and finish with authority. Batts is also a very dynamic passer who can thread the needle on a consistent basis. With his quickness and overall skill set, he’ll be a very reliable point guard for the Rams.
