The five best A-10 coaches as players

1. Derek Kellog
Kellog played four seasons as a point guard at UMass under then coach, Jon Calipari. The Minutemen were 111-24 over that span, including 51-11 in the Atlantic 10, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament each year, including the Elite Eight in 1995. Kellogg was a 1995 Atlantic 10 All-Conference selection and was a three-time All-Atlantic 10 Academic honoree. Kellog ranks fifth in assists (453), seventh in all-time three-pointers (138), as well as seventh in three-point percentage (38.1) at UMass.

2. Archie Miller
Miller played the point guard position at NC State from 1997-2002 (2-game 98-99 season) where he posted a career average of 7.7 points while hitting 42.8% of his threes with the Wolfpack. He ranks third all-time in three-pointers made there at 218 and hit an insane 57.5% of his 102 attempts in 2001.

3. Chris Mooney
Mooney started all 107 games of his college career for legendary head coach, Pete Carrill, amassing 1,071 career points for the Tigers. He was a First-Team All-Ivy League selection as a junior, Second-Team All-Ivy as a senior and finished runner-up in the conference’s Rookie of the Year voting as a freshman. Mooney ranks seventh on Princeton’s career list with 142 career three-pointers and is one of five Princeton student-athletes to score 1,000 points, grab 350 rebounds and dish 200 assists.

4. Dan Hurley
Hurley played for his father and legendary high school hoops coach, Bob Hurley Sr., at New Jersey’s St. Anthony H.S. before making the short move to Seton Hall where (like his brother Bobby Hurley at Duke) was a standout point guard. He posted 1,070 points for the Pirates, dished 437 career assists and and grabbed 171 steals. Hurley played in four consecutive postseason appearances (three NCAA, one NIT).

5. Jim Crews
Crews won four Big Ten titles and a national championship during a perfect 32-0 season at Indiana under legendary coach, Bob Knight. The 6’5 guard didn’t fill up the stat sheet but started 32 games (22 as a freshman) for a dominant team….bonus points.
