Duquesne’s Run Ends with Illinois Loss in March Madness

Matt MortonBy Matt MortonMarch 24, 2024No Comments2 Mins Read

The Duquesne Dukes had captured the hearts of basketball fans everywhere with their improbable journey to the NCAA Tournament. After a 47-year hiatus, they secured a spot in the Big Dance by defeating VCU 57-51 to clinch the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament title. But their magical run came to a screeching halt last night as they faced off against the formidable Illinois Fighting Illini in the second round.

Dominance from Start to Finish

The No. 11-seeded Dukes were up against the No. 3-seeded Illinois, a team that had been dominant throughout the season. From the opening tip-off, the Fighting Illini asserted their authority. Their offense was relentless, putting up an astonishing 50 points in the first half alone. By halftime, they led 50-26, leaving Duquesne shell-shocked.

Terrence Shannon Jr., Marcus Domask, and Coleman Hawkins led the charge for Illinois. Shannon dropped 28 points, grabbed four rebounds, and dished out four assists. Domask contributed 22 points, three rebounds, and seven assists. The Dukes, coached by Keith Dambrot, fought valiantly. Jimmy Clark III paced Duquesne with 14 points, one rebound, and four assists.

Farewell to a Coaching Legend

For Coach Dambrot, this game marked the end of an era. After pledging to retire at the end of the season, he watched as his team battled against the odds. Despite the loss, Dambrot’s impact on the program will be remembered. His leadership guided the Dukes to heights they hadn’t seen in decades.

Looking Ahead

Despite the loss, Duquesne’s journey was nothing short of remarkable. They upset No. 6-seeded BYU in the first round, securing their place in the tournament. Now, as Coach Dambrot steps into retirement, the Dukes will regroup and aim to make another splash in the 2024-25 season. Meanwhile, Illinois advances to the Sweet 16, where they’ll face No. 2-seeded Iowa State.
