The Richmond Spiders (14-3, 4-0 A-10) defeated the Massachusetts Minutewomen (3-13, 1-3 A-10) 79-65 on Wednesday morning. The Spiders extend the all-time series matchup to 21-9 over the Minutewomen.
The game started as being close, and the momentum was continuously swapping back and forth between the Spiders and the Minutewomen. By the end of the first quarter, UMass found themselves behind Richmond by only three points. At halftime, the Minutewomen only were down by six points to the Spiders. Kristin Williams opened the scoring in the second half by going on a 7-0 individual scoring run for the Minutewomen, which forced the Spiders to call a timeout after UMass took the lead by one point. By the end of the third quarter, Richmond seemed to have most of the momentum and a nine-point lead. During the fourth quarter, UMass was able to get the lead down to five points several times, but they were never able to take the lead again after the strong start to the third quarter.
The Spiders had four players in double-digits on Wednesday morning. Rachel Ullstrom had 26 points, Addie Budnik had 16 points, Maggie Doogan had 12 points, and Grace Townsend had 10 points to round out Richmond players in double-digit scoring. Siobhan Ryan had 9 points, Torin Rogers had 4 points, and Ally Sweeney had 2 points to round out all scorers in double digits.
The Minutewomen had three players in double digits. Williams led the way with 19 points, which tied her career high for the third time this season. Alexsia Rose had 13 points, and Stefanie Kulesza had 12 points to round out scorers in double digits. Dallas Pierce and Lilly Taulelei both had 6 points apiece, Tori Hyduke had 5 points, and Bre Bellamy had 4 points to round out all scorers.
UMass will travel to Tom Gola Arena to face off against the La Salle Explorers (5-10, 2-2 A-10) on Saturday, January 13th at 3pm on ESPN+. This will be the 37th meeting between these two teams, and the Minutewomen have the 22-14 series lead over the Explorers.
Richmond will remain home in the Robins Center as the Rhode Island Rams (11-6, 3-1 A-10) arrive in town for their matchup on Sunday, January 14th at 12pm on CBSSN. This will be the 30th meeting between these two teams, and the Spiders have a 19-10 edge over the Rams.
