George Washington Fires Jamion Christian

Daniel FrankBy Daniel FrankMarch 14, 20221 Comment2 Mins Read

News broke Monday morning that GW Men’s Basketball had parted ways with Head Coach Jamion Christian after just three seasons at the helm in Foggy Bottom.

Sources: George Washington has parted ways with Jamion Christian.

In his three seasons at GW, Christian went 29-50, 17-26 in Atlantic 10 Conference play. Additionally, he posted an 18-19 home record, 7-24 road record, 4-7 neutral site record. In 2020, George Washington finished in 11th place in the A-10, losing to #14 Fordham before the tournament was canceled the following day due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, the Colonials finished in 11th again, defeating #14 Fordham before losing to #6 George Mason. And this season, GW finished in 7th place, but lost to #10 UMass in the A-10 Tournament.

George Washington Men’s Basketball has not finished with a winning record since the 2017 season, which was Maurice Joseph’s interim year, when the Colonials went 20-15 (10-8) and eared a trip to the CBI. Since that year, the program has lost a total of 92 games, winning just 53 games during that span. This year’s 7th place finish in the A-10 was by far the best GW has had since 2017, and yet it was not enough to save Christian’s job. The firing comes as a surprise to many, while others saw the writing on the wall. Here’s a few of Twitter’s reactions to the firing:

I'm no fan of Jamion but I thought he had a pretty clear positive trend to sell, even if the 7th place finish was very fraudy, plus the covid year excuse. Didn't expect this.

My initial reaction too, but GW finished the season 227 in kenpom. They looked awful for the first 3 months. Still, three years is not a lot of time when you take over a cellar dweller. Rumors Jamion didn't make a lot of friends in Foggy Bottom.https://t.co/SXNe6vjAod

Just when it seemed like he started turning the program back around… https://t.co/A8cKfztyWH

I guess the message is out loud and clear: GW Men’s Basketball must return to being a contender ASAP. 7th place is not good enough, and now that the program is out of the cellar, they think they can land a big name.

GW joins the ranks of UMass and Rhode Island of A-10 Men’s programs looking for a new head-man. Time will tell if the Colonials can land the type of coach who can take this program finally to the next level again.
