Richmond At-Large Hopes Still Alive
Richmond, VA —
The Richmond Spiders defeated the Davidson Wildcats by a score of 80-63 at the Robins Center, clinching a double-bye in Brooklyn. They didn’t exactly breeze through this one, as they found themselves down for 21:56 in this one, but Nick Sherod helped spark the comeback. Nick hit 5 3’s in the 2nd half, finishing with 19 points. This team is that much better when he can contribute and be a factor, especially from deep. Richmond had 4 guys finish in double figures (Francis, Cayo, Sherod, Golden), and finished the night shooting 27-55 from the field. Free throws were also huge for the Spiders, as they knocked down 18-22 in the victory.
Robins Center Factor
Richmond found themselves trailing for a good portion of this game, and we can think that the crowd here tonight had something to do with their comeback. This was one of the loudest and engaged crowd we’ve had at the Robins Center this season. Nathan Cayo is another guy who helped spark the Spider run in the 2nd half, as he finished with 11 points & 8 rebounds in the Richmond victory. Despite not knocking down a 3 in the 1st half, Richmond finished 8-19 from beyond the arc. This game proved exactly how important a Nick Sherod contribution can be for this team.
Road Ahead
The Spiders will make a pit stop in Pittsburgh to take on Duquesne this Friday night, before preparing for their trip to Brooklyn. With the double-bye clinched, we will still hope to see a strong performance as they prepare for their 1st game a week from Friday at the Barclays Center. The bubble is still in tact with 1 more regular season game. As always, stay up to date with all things Richmond basketball on Twitter at @AustinDaisey11 & @A10Talk.
