Richmond Back to Winning Ways

Richmond, VA —

The Richmond Spiders snapped their 2 game losing streak thanks to their victory over George Washington 76-54.  The 1st half told the tale in this one, as the Spiders had a 14-0 run in the opening half.  Richmond never looked back after that.  Grant Golden was physical & athletic down low, scoring 20 in the Spider victory.  Nick Sherod picked it up tonight as well, scoring 15, and knocking down both of his looks from deep.  The Spiders forced 18 George Washington turnovers, including 13 steals.

Spiders Don’t Back Down

This was a game where Richmond kept their foot on the throttle for it’s entirety.  Tyler Burton showed off his athleticism once again, scoring 12 in the contest.  Richmond led 39-22 at the break, and did a great job of limiting Jameer Nelson Jr’s offensive production.  He scored 6 early points in the 1st half, but the Spider defense left him scoreless for the remainder of the half.  He added 5 in the 2nd half, finishing the game with 11 points.  Jacob Gilyard had a solid night overall, scoring 4, dishing out 9 assists, and recording 4 steals for Richmond.  Just as everyone suspected, Jake Wojcik was the leading rebounder the Richmond tonight.  He finished with 4 points and 6 rebounds.  The one thing that the Spiders did back down tonight, was Jamison Battle.  He came into this one averaging 12.7 ppg, and the Richmond defense held him to just 6.  This was a key factor in tonight’s victory, and it was well executed by Chris Mooney.

Road Ahead for Richmond

The Spiders will get a week off before their next contest.  They will hit the road next Saturday for a date with the 7-14 Fordham Rams from the Bronx.  They will then head to Philadelphia for a mid-week contest vs La Salle, who the Spiders defeated 75-57 at the Robins Center.  These 2 games will be very important in the Atlantic 10 standings, as VCU will be in town on Feb. 15.  Richmond and many others are eying a double bye in the A-10 Tournament in Brooklyn, and each and every game has gotten that much more important.  As always, for all things Richmond Spider basketball, be sure to follow on Twitter at @AustinDaisey11 & @A10Talk, as well as on www.a10talk.com.  We will see you Saturday Spider Nation!
