Box Score Breakdown: St. Bonaventure 62 Fordham 55 (OT)

A difficult three game stretch was in the rear view mirror. For St. Bonaventure, trips to VCU and Dayton plus a home game with Rhode Island, saw results on the wrong side of the ledger. The trip to Fordham, the experts said, might not have provided as tough a challenge as the prior three. For a minute, dismiss the experts, winning on the road is never easy. The Bonnies were in a battle  needed 45 minutes to escape Rose Hill, and avoid a four game slide,  with a 62-55 victory. The numbers…

In a 67 possession, deliberate paced, game:

Offensive efficiency
St. Bonaventure 93
Fordham 82

What St. Bonaventure did well. Pound the offensive boards. In a game where possessions were at a premium the Bonnies extended a number of them by showing a 38=10% edge in offensive rebounding percentage. In raw numbers they grabbed 15 offensive boards while limiting the Rams to 4.

What Fordham did well. Force turnovers. Jeff Neubauer’s club forced the Bonnies into a 24% turnover rate. Those miscues were particularly damaging as the Rams scored 21 points off turnovers.

Notes:

Dominick Welch the game  ‘MVP’. The Bona sophomore earned those honors on kenpom.com. Welch scored a game high 22 points while earning another game pace setting total with 14 rebounds, 4 on the offensive end. Welch’s performance was vital as he  stepped up on a game where Kyle Lofton struggled. Lofton was 0 for 9 from the field (6 points) while committing 3 turnovers.

Coach Mark Schmidt had Osun Osunniyi back in the lineup. The Bona big man missed the prior three games due to concussion protocol. ‘Double O’ was the only other Bona scorer in double figures with 10 points.

The Rams were paced by their lone double digit scorer Ty Perry with 16. Jalen Cobb had 7 points for Fordham. The sophomore guard showed versatility with teams highs in rebounds (7) and Assists (6). Cobb and teammate Antwon Portley tied for team honors with 3 steals.

St. Bonaventure is 13-8 with a 5-3 A10 record.

Fordham fell to 7-13, 1-7 in conference.

Rams had a few conference heart breakers to date. Put this one down as well as an OT loss at Duquesne two weeks earlier.

Wasn’t a full moon but…On this night three of the five conference contests went the extra session(s). Beside Bona-Fordham we had St. Louis over LaSalle 77-76 and George Washington outlasting Davidson 107-104 in four overtimes.
