Spiders defeat Charleston
In front of 5,804 fans today at the Robins Center, the Richmond Spiders defeated the Charleston Cougars 78-71. The Spiders were led by Blake Francis who scored 20 points in the Richmond victory. Jacob Gilyard had a quiet game statistic wise tonight, but he made up for it with his energy on the court. Between him and Grant Golden, Richmond played with some serious attitude and it was fun to watch.
Passing Clinic
Richmond did a great job moving the ball around once again. This team just has a knack for finding the extra pass that will lead to an even better look. Grant Golden has been fun to watch since returning from injury, as he has been a key factor in the Spiders ball movement. He finished the game with 17 points & 3 assists, including a huge 3 putting Richmond up 8 in the late going. Andre Gustavson had another great game for Richmond as he hit double digits for the 2nd straight game, as he scored 10 points. He always seemed to be in the right place at the right time as he had a lot of success down low, as well as from deep, as he hit two 3’s.
Overall Energy for the Spiders
Richmond came out today and it just seemed as if they told themselves that they are 8-1 for a reason. They didn’t back down from anything, and that includes Chris Mooney as well. After an egregious no call on a layup attempt, Mooney was letting the official hear it during the timeout, and rightfully so. Grant Golden played with an attitude that was something fierce today, which I’m sure was quite terrifying if you are an opponent.
Road Ahead
Richmond will head to Norfolk on Wednesday to face Old Dominion University (7:00). We can definitely look for the Spiders to get some more votes in the polls, and they could very well be ranked. This is the beginning of something special, and we hope you are excited as we are for what is to come.
