Atlantic 10 Sunday Recap: VCU takes down St. Bonaventure, wins 10th straight

Game of the Night

St. Bonaventure Bonnies 76, VCU Rams 84

The Rams took down St. Bonaventure on Sunday night to score their 10th straight win overall and 7th straight win in conference play. VCU (15-5, 7-0 A 10) has climbed to the top of the Atlantic 10 standings and has proven itself capable of winning the league this year. St. Bonaventure (12-6, 4-3 A 10) had gotten off to a hot start in the conference, winning its first four, but the Bonnies have since dropped their last three contests.

It was a battle of the backcourts on Sunday afternoon, particularly between St. Bonaventure’s Marcus Posley and VCU’s JeQuan Lewis. Posley led all scores with 30 points on 12-20 shooting from the field. JeQuan Lewis led the Rams with 26 ponts on 8-15 shooting while also managing to dish out 7 assists. The Bonnies also got a double-digit scoring night out of Dion Wright with 18; he also had 13 rebounds. Jaylen Adams scored 11 points. VCU’s Melvin Johnson and Justin Tillman were great as well, scoring 21 and 17 respectively. It was a very choppy game as the teams combined to commit 45 fouls.

VCU keeps the ball rolling with yet another win in conference play. The Rams will certainly be tested, though, when they go on the road to face Davidson this Friday. St. Bonaventure, on the other hand, is starting to face the brutal part of its conference schedule. The Bonnies will now have to host Richmond on Thursday before going on the road against St. Joseph’s next week. Things won’t get much easier.

Elsewhere in Atlantic 10 Action

Dayton Flyers 64, Fordham Rams 50

The Flyers were able to capture their fourth straight win when they took down the Rams on Sunday afternoon. Dayton (16-3, 6-1 A 10) was able to hold the Rams to just 20-54 (37.0%) from the floor and 5-25 (20.0%) from behind the arc. The Flyers were led by Charles Cooke who had 26 points and 6 rebounds on the night. Fordham (11-7, 2-5 A 10) struggled to get much going in terms of offense on Sunday afternoon, but the Rams managed to put up a fight and keep it somewhat of a game. They were led by Ryan Rhoomes with 14 points.

St. Joseph’s Hawks 69, La Salle Explorers 58

St. Joseph’s cruises to yet another victory as it was able to take down it’s conference rival on Sunday. St. Joseph’s (16-3, 5-1 A 10) was led by DeAndre’ Bembry and Isaiah Miles who had 16 and 14 points respectively. Also scoring in double figures for the Hawks was Lamarr Kimble who had 10. La Salle (5-12, 1-5 A 10) led early but ultimately got run out of the building in the second half. The Explorers were led in scoring by Jordan Price with 14 but also got double-digit contributions from Cleon Roberts and Johnnie Shuler with 12 and 11 respectively.
