Atlantic 10 Power Rankings: St. Bonaventure, George Mason on the rise

Grant LabedzBy Grant LabedzDecember 5, 20161 Comment5 Mins Read

Each week, A10 Talk’s staff ranks each team in the Atlantic 10 conference (1-14) based on where they believe each team places overall. Each team’s ranking is averaged, and A10 Talk creates a compiled ranking to represent the site. 11 different contributors vote in each week’s rankings. Be sure to check out last week’s power rankings post. Here are this week’s power rankings.

1. Rhode Island Rams (Avg: 1.33)

Rhode Island had a tough week losing two true road games by narrow margins: Valparaiso and Providence outlasted the Rams by 3 points in both contests. The Rams return home to face Old Dominion on Tuesday and then go on the road to take on Houston on Saturday.

2. Dayton Flyers (Avg: 1.67)

Dayton only played one game this past week, but the Flyers looked sharp taking down a tough mid-major in Winthrop 83-67. This week shouldn’t prove too challenging for Dayton as it’ll get to face St. Joseph’s (IN) on Tuesday and Eastern Tennessee State on Saturday, both games at home.

3. VCU Rams (Avg: 3.00)

VCU overcame an early 16 point deficit against Princeton but still beat the Tigers by double digits. The Rams had one of their worst offensive performances in a long time as they fell 46-64 to Illinois in the HoopHall Miami Invitational. The Rams will host Georgia Tech on Wednesday and travel to take on Old Dominion on Saturday.

4. St. Bonaventure Bonnies (Avg: 4.00)

St. Bonaventure went 2-0 this week as it was able to take down both Siena and Buffalo. Things are looking up for the Bonnies, but they’ll have a tricky week when they have to face Hofstra on the road on Tuesday and UNC Wilmington at home on Saturday.

5. Davidson Wildcats (Avg: 5.00)

Davidson was able to snag a road win over Mercer on Tuesday, but the Wildcats went on the road and got blown out in the second half against Charleston. Davidson only plays once this coming week, but it’s got a brutal date with North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

6. Massachusetts Minutemen (Avg: 7.00)

Massachusetts had a decent week as it took down Wagner on Wednesday, but the Minutemen suffered a disappointing home loss to UCF after Nick Banyard hit an improbable three pointer before the buzzer. The Minutemen get Pacific at home on Thursday and then Providence on the road on Saturday.

6. La Salle Explorers (Avg: 7.00)

La Salle had a good week as it beat both Lehigh and Bucknell in home games. This week will be brutal for the Explorers as they play Villanova at the Palestra on Tuesday and Georgetown in Miami on Saturday.

8. Richmond Spiders (Avg: 8.67)

Richmond had a brutal week as it went 0-2 against decent competition. The Spiders couldn’t pull out a road win over Bucknell and then failed to beat Wake Forest at home. This week features one game for the Spiders: a home game against UMBC on Saturday.

9. Saint Joseph’s Hawks (Avg: 9.00)

Saint Joseph’s had a tough week against tough opponents and wasn’t able to pull out any big wins. The Temple Owls went into Hawk Hill and took down Saint Joseph’s, and the Hawks got crushed on the road against Villanova. They’ll play on the road against Drexel on Sunday.

10. George Washington Colonials (Avg: 9.67)

George Washington needed a banked three pointer at the buzzer to get past USF on Saturday, and then the Colonials got crushed by Florida State in D.C. on Sunday. They’ll try to bounce back this week when they go on the road to face Temple on Wednesday and return home to face Howard on Saturday.

11. George Mason Patriots (Avg: 10.00)

George Mason likely had the best week out of any team in the Atlantic 10. The Patriots won an improbable game on the road against Northern Iowa and was able to handle Mercer as well. Mason has won 5 in a row and has improved to 6-3 on the season. Things will be tough this week though as Mason plays at Penn State on Wednesday and at Pennsylvania on Saturday.

12. Duquesne Dukes (Avg: 12.33)

Though George Mason’s win over Northern Iowa was unexpected, the Dukes may have gotten the most surprising win of the week, downing rival Pittsburgh at the PPG Paints Arena. Unfortunately for the Dukes, they lost at home to UMBC earlier in the week (college basketball for you). Duquesne will face Robert Morris on Tuesday and host Central Connecticut State on Saturday.

13. Fordham Rams (Avg: 12.67)

Fordham had a less than impressive week as it blew a late lead and lost to Sacred Heart and then lost on the road to Harvard. Things won’t get much easier this week when the Rams have to play away from home against New York rivals St. John’s on Thursday and Manhattan on Saturday.

14. Saint Louis Billikens (Avg: 14.00)

Saint Louis had another tough week as its losing streak extends to 4. The Billikens could not manage a win over Samford or Kansas St, and they fall to 2-5. Saint Louis will have a brutal matchup against Wichita State on Tuesday and then a home game against Chicago State on Sunday.
