Freshman Focus is an A10talk series that takes a look at some of the incoming freshman for the upcoming 2016-17 season. We take a closer look at some of the more talented first year players who will take the court for the first time next season.
Player Profile:
Nick Sherod was the second member of three to join the 2016 class. Sherod attended high school less than one mile from Richmond’s campus at St. Christopher’s. The Sherod family is basketball royalty in the state of Virginia. Nick’s father EJ played at ODU; his grandfather played at VCU before going on to play for the New York Knicks. Nick was one of the most successful high school players in Virginia. He holds the record for most career points in the state at 2,815. He was VISAA All-State First Team in his junior and senior year. He also helped Team Loaded to an Adidas Uprising Summer Championship. Sherod chose Richmond over William & Mary and Mt. Saint Mary’s.
Sherod is a player who really shines on the offensive end. He is a LETHAL shooter who can score from just about anywhere. His range extends way beyond the three point line. Nick can pullup from the parking lot. Sherod is best at reading and coming off screens making him a good fit for Chris Mooney’s system. The 6’4 guard is also strong at attacking the basket. Sherod will have to develop on the defensive end, but he will definitely have a major impact this upcoming season.
Potential Impact:
Sherod is a versatile wing player who will get big minutes early. Chris Mooney has a lot of options at the wing, but a lot of the guys are unproven. This allows Sherod a chance to get big minutes early. Sherod’s impact will be felt the most on offense. His scoring ability gives Mooney a lot of options. I would compare Sherod to Spider great David Gonzalvez. Both guys could flat out score. Sherod will have a chance to be even better than Gonzalvez. With a lot of unproven players, I wouldn’t be surprised to see if Sherod started this year for Chris Mooney.
