In a strong season opener, the VCU Rams defeated Bellarmine 84-65 at the Siegel Center on November 4. Key performances by Max Shulga and Joe Bamisile propelled VCU’s high-scoring offense and resilient defense, setting the tone for their 2024-25 season.
From the start, the Rams controlled the tempo. Max Shulga led VCU with an efficient 19 points, shooting 100% from the field, including four three-pointers. His perfect shooting was complemented by Phillip Russell’s contribution, who scored 16 points, sinking five three-pointers out of nine attempts. The Rams’ offensive success came largely from their shooting accuracy, boasting a 52.7% field goal percentage, with an impressive 51.7% from beyond the arc.
VCU’s Joe Bamisile also played a crucial role, tallying 18 points and showcasing athleticism with two key blocks. His aggressive play in the paint and consistent shooting helped keep VCU ahead throughout the game, giving Bellarmine’s defense persistent trouble. The Rams were also relentless on second-chance points, outscoring Bellarmine 18-9 in this area. Michael Belle contributed 10 rebounds, bolstering VCU’s defense and helping limit Bellarmine’s scoring opportunities.
Bellarmine, while competitive, struggled to keep pace. Dezmond McKinney and Ben Johnson each scored 15 points for Bellarmine, but the team’s limited three-point shooting (30.8%) prevented them from mounting a substantial comeback. VCU capitalized on Bellarmine’s turnovers, scoring 16 points off 10 forced turnovers.
This 84-65 victory demonstrates VCU’s balanced attack and efficient shooting capabilities, with their defensive resilience playing a crucial role. The Rams look to build on this momentum as they prepare for Boston College in Annapolis, MD for the Veterans Classic on Friday night.
