Update: Richmond Promotes Steve Thomas

Update 4/20/2019

Sources have confirmed that Richmond will promote  Steve Thomas to assistant coach, replacing Kim Lewis, who’s taken the same role with Mercer.  Thomas has served as the Spiders’ Director of Basketball Operations since 2015 and previously served as Director of Student-Athlete Development at Virginia Tech under Buzz Williams.

The University of Richmond men’s basketball team will be promoting from within to fill their vacant assistant coaching position.

Assistant coach Kim Lewis and Richmond parted ways on Monday, a UR spokesperson informed me.

After just two days, Lewis found his new home with Mercer.  He posted to his Twitter account Wednesday, https://twitter.com/CoachK_Lew/status/1118619339152818176, saying “Great to be with my guy, Greg Gary, at Mercer University!!”  The Mercer basketball website has also added Lewis to their staff (https://mercerbears.com/roster.aspx?roster=167&path=mbball).

Two minutes after his Twitter post, Lewis posted again, saying “As long as God is with you, it doesn’t matter who is against you.” (https://twitter.com/CoachK_Lew/status/1118620049911296000)

The same UR spokesperson also said, “We are looking forward to filling the position quickly.  Don’t want to speculate on potential candidates.”

However, my sources have confirmed to me that the Spiders will be promoting from within and will not seek an outside hire for the assistant coaching position.
