We’re not even into the official offseason, and it’s looking as though Dayton will lose 3 significant players on the 2018-2019 roster. Dayton senior Darrell Davis graduates, Xeyrius Williams has already been given the go ahead to transfer, and Matej Svoboda will be going back to his home country, the Czech Republic, to play pro ball there. However, on the upside, Dayton junior Ryan Mikesell returns after redshirting due to hip surgery, and Obadiah Toppin will be eligible to play after being academically redshirted. The Flyers are also getting Dwayne Cohill who is in the top thirty in scoring in the OHSAA. As of right now, it would appear Dayton has two open scholarships.
Though there were quite a bit of freshman mistakes this past season, I’m hoping to see a much improved returning roster. I think the starting five next season could be comprised of Jordan Davis, Jalen Crutcher, Josh Cunnigham, Trey Landers, and Kostas Antetokounmpo. If the offseason goes well, I could see Ryan Mikesell eventually start. Dwayne Cohill will be a good player off the bench. How they do during the season will depend on the defense and if they can continue to hit threes, but, I would start with giving Josh Cunningham more looks inside the paint. He shot 70% from inside the three point arc. We will keep an eye on moving parts throughout the offseason, and can expect head coach Anthony Grant to get some good looks from the growing transfer market this offseason.
