Bonnies lose to UNC Wilmington in a heartbreaker off last-second shot

All game the St. Bonaventure Bonnies faced an up-hill battle.

Every time the Bonnies seemed to cut the deficit to one possession, the Seahawks would walk down the court and drain a three. After a full game of this, finally, the Bonnies caught a break. Down 77-79 with 14 seconds left, junior Jaylen Adams drove to the hole, drew the contact, and converted the and-one layup. Then, he nailed the free throw to give the Bonnies the lead. The Reilly Center erupted in joy and shook from the energy released.

And then, poof.

Denzel Ingram, who scored the last 12 points of the game, hit a fadeaway jumper with a second to spare.

Just like that, after fighting all game, after all the missed calls, the crazy three pointers, after everything, it was over. Final score 81-80, Seahawks.

“Every loss stings,” said senior forward Denzel Gregg. “This one was no different.”

Gregg was a bright spot for the Bonnies scoring 9 points, grabbing 12 boards, dishing 3 assists and notching 3 blocks. One such block gave the Bonnies the ball back to set up the Adams and-one.

Adams also played well leading in scoring with 18 and diming 6 assists.

Senior forward David Andoh made his presence felt with 15 points, including two 3’s.

For the Seahawks, they featured a balanced attack with four players scoring in double figures. Ingram led the way with 19 followed by C.J Bryce with 17, JaQuel Richmond with 16 and Chris Flemmings with 15.

“I let my guys shoot it,” said UNC Wilmington Coach Kevin Keatts. “We didn’t care who scored.”

Up next for the Seahawks (8-1), they’ll continue their road trip to face the Campbell Fighting Camels (5-4).

As for the Bonnies (6-3), Head Coach Mark Schmidt and company head to Buffalo in seven days for the annual Big 4 Classic featuring Canisius, Niagara and Buffalo.

Saint Bonaventure will travel to the Key Bank Center to take on Niagara at 1:00PM Saturday.

“We want to win the Big Four,” said Schmidt. “We won it last year and we’ll try to win it again this year.”
